Why Give to the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex

The Coggan Family Aquatic Complex—known as “The Coggan”—is a nationally renowned aquatic training complex located next to La Jolla High School. The Coggan is open year-round to the public and owned and operated by the La Jolla Aquatic Complex Foundation.

Over the past two decades, The Coggan has come to stand for excellence: a place where children learn to swim safely, youth grow into champions, and adults of all abilities stay strong and active.

On any given day, the Coggan’s Olympic size swimming pool bustles with activity. It is the home pool for:

  • The physical education programs of La Jolla High School and Muirlands Middle School;

  • La Jolla High School swim and water polo teams;

  • La Jolla United water polo; and

  • Wind N Sea swim team and Wind N Sea Masters Swimming.

The complex also hosts the CIF water polo championships annually and other regional competitions, daily public recreational swimming, adult triathlon fitness training, lifeguard training, swim therapy, and group and private swim lessons for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

Since its inception, The Coggan has served thousands of families and inspired a lifelong love of swimming—a passion that is now being passed down to a new generation.

In 2023, donors from the community made it possible to complete a $4.1 million capital campaign that replastered the pool, replaced the pool deck, installed a new hot tub, and made numerous building enhancements. In late 2024, the second phase of renovations will complete improvements to the locker rooms, bathrooms and other buildings.

Today, the Coggan is thriving because of the generous support received from the community, who  for generations, have helped build the Coggan into the exceptional place it is today. The Coggan is the only pool connected to a high school in the San Diego Unified School District.

The Coggan keeps pool fees and memberships as low as possible so everyone can access the Coggan to maintain their fitness, compete in sports, learn to swim, and stay connected to their community. We believe it is important that everybody can access the pool to maintain their fitness, compete in sports, learn to swim, and stay connected to their community.  It is for this reason we rely on donations from the community.

We must raise funds annually to support the following programs and services including:

  • Comprehensive Aquatics Instruction for more than 2,400 youth annually including over 500 young athletes, ages 6-18, in year-round swim and water polo teams.

  • Professional training for current and future lifeguards who ensure the safety of the Coggan pool, as well as go on to serve as lifeguards across the region.

  • Robust programming including daily public recreational swimming for adults of all ages and abilities, adult triathlon, and fitness training for swimmers of all ages and abilities.

  • Affordable Community Access with competitively priced membership plans, low community use fees, and scholarships to ensure access to all who are interested.

  • World Class Competition Venue hosting more than 200 water polo games and swim meets each year.

  • A Capital Reserve Fund for major maintenance expenditures in the future.

Together, we can ensure that the Coggan will be available to be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Board of the La Jolla Aquatic Complex Foundation is responsible for the care and operations of the Coggan and annually raises funds to cover the gap in memberships and fees.

Consider “paying forward” the impact the Coggan has made in your life and the community with a gift that will fund our programs, scholarship, and maintenance fund.
